For the month of October, the Chronicle & Echo collaborated with Weston Favell Shopping Centre to celebrate its 50th anniversary. We spoke to new and long-standing team members and business owners about the impact the centre continues to have after five decades - as well as looking back on some nostalgic images.

Tuesday (October 29) marked 50 years since the opening of Weston Favell Shopping Centre to the day, and the team brought the community together to celebrate the five-decade milestone. Situated outside Tesco, there were silent disco and karaoke areas, speeches were made and awards given out, and the original Wombles paid the centre a visit 50 years on.

A branch of a major bank and building society is pleased that they will remain located in Weston Favell Shopping Centre until at least 2028, as the community hub celebrates its 50th anniversary. Gareth Francoise has been the senior branch manager at Weston Favell’s Nationwide for almost seven years – with another four years in a different role prior to that.

The longest-serving staff member at Weston Favell Shopping Centre says he has to “pinch himself” when he thinks about his career achievement, and praised his workplace ahead of its 50-year milestone. Cliff Ebanks joined the centre team as security in November 1998 and was headhunted for the role after being out of a similar type of work for just two weeks.
